The Alchemy of Light and Time
Bill Hao is a Canadian artist cascading the boundaries of historical photographic processes. Operating within the breathtaking expanse of the Canadian wilderness, he creates monumental 32×48″ ultra-large format wet plate collodion photographs. Utilizing a handmade giant camera and a mobile, off-grid darkroom bus, his practice bridges the rugged sublimity of nature with the irreversible alchemy of light and time, creating true photographic monuments.

Darkroom Bus

The wet collodion process is an early photographic process that requires the photographic material to be coated, sensitized, exposed and then developed within a few minutes before the plate dries. To work in the field, this process requires a movable darkroom, so I converted a big bus to a darkroom RV.
